Goodbye

Goodbye.
I said it loud, I said it clear.
Yet beneath the strength,
it hid some tears.
Tears to be understood,
tears to be endured.
But endurance came with limits,
and understanding, with love.
Love was never something we could hold.
We hanker but never understand,
that saying goodbye can be a way to love.
Loving is never a matter of possession,
it can be a form of surrendering.
Tonight I let you go,
not because I love any less.
But because I no longer understand;
love is a word we can never use.
And tonight tears shall be my companion,
tears to be endured,
tears to be understood.
Tears that signified an end.
An end not to love;
an end rather, to be mine.
